36th America’s Cup , Auckland, New Zeeland

The America’s Cup, the pinnacle of yachting, was first contested in 1851 making it the oldest trophy in international sport, predating the modern Olympic Games by 45 years.

Auckland is one of the America’s Cup’s most storied venues.

It sits with only a handful of global locations that have ever hosted an America’s Cup Match in the past 30 years alongside Newport, Fremantle, San Diego, Valencia, San Francisco and Bermuda.

Auckland was the host city to the 2000 and 2003 America’s Cup’s and is world renown as the “City of Sails” due to its large number of recreational vessels as well as continuing to feature as an iconic stopover in the Volvo Ocean Race and its predecessor the Whitbread Round the World Race since 1977- 78.

It is also New Zealand’s most populous city, and has been home to New Zealand’s America’s Cup challengers since 1985. Team New Zealand’s 1st America’s Cup victory in 1995 igniting the development of Auckland’s central waterfront and entertainment hub- The Viaduct Harbour, which will again be the centre of the 2021 America’s Cup event including the further development along Wynyard Wharf and onto Wynyard Point.

The jewel of Auckland without question is the Waitemata Harbour and the Hauraki Gulf which will be the battle field for the most technological and innovative America’s Cup ever being raced in the new AC75 class of foiling monohull yachts.

Surrounded by vantage points such as North Head, Bastion Point and North Shore beaches, Auckland’s nautical amphitheatre will witness America’s Cup history once again starting with the Prada Cup Challenger selection series from January 2021 building towards the main event; The 36thAmerica’s Cup Match presented by Prada as Emirates Team New Zealand will aim to defend the oldest trophy in international sport between 6th- 21st March 2021.
